Post offices adopting NFTs leads to a philately renaissance cryptomarketbag Blockchain update

Postage stamp? If you’re a millennial, there’s a good chance you’ve used Google to figure out that there is a term devoted to collecting and studying postage stamps.

the same search paint Picture a decline in a hobby, as the younger generation is increasingly preoccupied with their screens and a constant stream of dopamine hits provided by TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and other popular social media platforms.

Two European postal services have tried to capitalize on the popularity of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in recent years to revive the stamp sector. Cointelegraph delved into their collaborative effort with the Netherlands’ PostNL and the Austrian Post Office (PostAG) at the Blockchain Expo in Amsterdam, which has successfully married postage stamps with NFTs.

PostAG Stamp Collection Head Patricia Lieberman and PostNL Product Manager Sacha van Horn are a vibrant couple who have sparked a working friendship that seems to be the backbone of the NFT-powered renaissance of philately in both countries.

Postage first explored the use of NFT Post Stamps in 2019 to issue real-world stamps with a digital twin NFT, originally minted on the Ethereum blockchain. Over the next two years, the Austrian Post Office continued the project with near-field communication (NFC) chip functionality introduced in 2021 to advance the functionality, verification and security of postage stamps.

Reflecting on the dwindling interest in philately, Lieberman opened up about the initial idea and its quick rise about three years ago:

“In 2019, we invented the idea of having a physical ticket with an NFT, it was mind blowing, and we were overwhelmed by all that backlash. And that’s why we said, well, there’s a target group out there that is going to collect interested in this new approach.”

Van Horn’s efforts to continue innovation in PostnL’s stamp offerings had already explored the use of augmented reality and artificial intelligence on stamps, but the exploits of Postage’s NFTs pushed them to reach their Austrian counterpart. Knowing that development would take significant time and resources, a collaboration was formed to:

“So we actually decided to approach the Austrians as they were the first, and we really wanted to take their experience and their knowledge and ask them, How did you do that?”

The partnership has culminated in the joint launch of a new version of Crypto Stamps which is being labeled as the first issue of Joint Crypto Stamps. it’s also first edition Postnl is accompanied by NFT stamps, with stamps issued in various colors of the Netherlands and Austrian flags. The postage stamps also feature the national flowers of the respective countries with tulips and edelweiss in the background of the PostNL and PostAG stamps.

The physical stamps are manufactured by Austrian firm VariusCard, whose managing director Michael Dorner unpacked the latest security features in conversation with Cointelegraph. The fourth edition of Crypto Stamps has invisible UV rays and forensic protection. NFC chips also provide cryptographic proof of the authenticity of a given stamp.

Dorner also recounted recent conversations with an older generation of Austrians who were stamp enthusiasts, who were introduced to NFTs through PostAG’s crypto stamps. Unfamiliar with digital collectibles, some grandparents essentially asked their grandchildren to help them hold onto the digital twin of their real world stamps.

“He called his grandchildren and said, ‘Do you know what an NFT is?’ And the grandson says, ‘Yeah, what do you have?’ Suddenly they sat down to dinner together, they checked crypto tickets and the kids were like, ‘Dada, let’s see what color you have.'”

All three individuals believe that NFT-paired stamps are leading a stamp renaissance, with Dorner describing this change as the next generation of collectors:

“Two generations with two completely different aspects come together, and they talk. And you have this new community, you have this ‘Collectors 3.0.’ started getting interested in postage stamps.

These positive sentiments are also supported by the popularity of each launch, with Dorner and Lieberman highlighting that all previous NFT-paired collections were completely sold out.

While not giving an estimated number, Dorner estimated that 150,000 to 250,000 post stamps with NFT pairs were sold since 2019 – suggesting that the initiative could be one of the most successful NFT projects in the world. The latest version of Crypto Stamps is molded on the Polygon blockchain.
